AOTW | Jorja Shields Vinicius Boyd named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

By Reegan MacAulay

Women’s soccer player Jorja Shields and men’s soccer player Vinicius Boyd have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 20, 2024.

Shields, a rookie defender from Tignish, P.E.I., put together a strong defensive performance in Holland’s’ final two regular season games over the weekend. The matches were against the top-two seeded teams in the conference on home turf, the MSVU Mystics and the UKC Blue Devils. On Saturday, Holland lost 2-0 to MSVU, and, on Sunday, lost 1-0 to UKC.

Shields and the Hurricanes concluded the regular season with a 5-3-4 record and the third seed in the 2024 ACAA Championships at Crandall University in Moncton, New Brunswick. Holland will have a rematch against UKC in ACAA semifinal action on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Boyd, a second-year forward from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, helped the ‘Canes conclude their regular season on home turf with four of a potential six points. While they were unsuccessful in their late push for the fourth and final playoff spot, Boyd scored the penalty winner in a 1-0 win against the MSVU Mystics on Saturday, and put in a solid effort in a 2-2 tie against the UKC Blue Devils on Sunday; however, he had to come off injured at halftime on Sunday.

Boyd and the Hurricanes concluded the regular season with a 3-6-3 record and sixth overall in the conference, which ended the team’s 16-year playoff appearance streak (excluding 2020).
